Nasi Jagung Pegirian

"Ultimate Fit for Night Crawlers"

As I always say, Surabaya is the right place for those who are seeking for a culinary adventure. There will always be some new hidden gems appearing out of nowhere, with tastes that will blow your mind. Hmm...seems like a little bit too exaggerating, but somehow it just shows how excited I am about this place.

Pic.1 The Counter

When I arrived at this place, I could not find any sign or banner explaining what they are actually selling. However, It was already packed with people queuing to be served. What you need to do is just walk to the counter and ask the person serving the food.

The stall is very simple, they use a long tent with long table and several stools in it, right next to the street. This way, you will often share your table with other hungry visitors and that is what makes street food amazing.

Here, they are famous for its Nasi Jagung (rice mixed with corn). They serve nasi jagung with several toppings such as beef meat, beef tripe, beef intestine, mackerel and many others. The most popular menu is Nasi Jagung with beef tripes and intestines and that is what I saw most people there ordered. So I wasted no time to also ordered it and what amazed me the most was the price. One portion of Nasi Jagung with beef tripes and intestines only cost about Rp. 10.000,- or around $0.75, and one portion of Nasi Jagung with beef meat and mackerel only cost about Rp. 12.000,- or around $0.90. Crazily Cheap Right!

Turned out that it wasn't just cheap but also tastes amazing. The rice have a slight aromatic taste, not too mushy and not to dry either, just perfect. The mackerel is also perfectly seasoned, not too salty and complimented the rice well. However, the beef meat was a little bit too stiff but still acceptable. What stand out was the tripes and intestines, they are perfectly cooked, quite tender and not too chewy. Balance well with the rice and the grated coconut sprinkled on top it. Overall, it was a great experience for me, and if you are somehow have that adventurous genes in you, I hardly recommend you to try this place. As usual, I provide you the location below. Happy Exploring!
